Job Title: Scientist – Viral & Aggregate Particle Analysis
Location: Leiden, The Netherlands
Assignment Type: Contract (8 months)
Start Date: ASAP
About the Company
A leading biotechnology organization focused on the development of viral vaccines, viral vectors, and recombinant proteins. With state-of-the-art capabilities spanning process and analytical development through clinical manufacturing, the company partners with global clients to accelerate biopharmaceutical innovation.
Role Summary
We are looking for a seasoned scientist experienced in viral and aggregate particle analysis to join the analytical development department of a fast-paced biotech environment.
This is a hands-on, project-driven position, ideal for someone who can take ownership of characterization activities for viral products and biologics — driving assay development, optimization, and data interpretation to support product understanding and process improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Lead analytical activities focused on virus particle quantification, aggregation, and physicochemical characterization.
Perform and interpret biophysical and microscopic assays such as:
Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS)
Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA)
Size-Exclusion Chromatography with MALS (SEC-MALS)
Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)
Analytical Ultracentrifugation (AUC)
Develop, qualify, and transfer analytical methods for viral particle characterization.
Support in-process and product characterization studies for viral vaccines and gene therapy vectors.
Collaborate closely with Upstream, Downstream, and QC teams to ensure data-driven decision-making.
Prepare detailed technical reports, method documentation, and client-ready summaries aligned with quality standards.
Contribute scientific expertise during troubleshooting and process optimization efforts.
Profile Requirements
MSc or PhD in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Virology, or related field.
5–10 years of experience in analytical development or biophysical characterization within biotech or vaccine development.
Strong technical background in DLS, NTA, SEC-MALS, TEM, and AUC.
Solid understanding of virus structure, aggregation behavior, and formulation stability.
Familiarity with GMP/GLP settings and regulated environments.
Excellent communication, data interpretation, and documentation skills.
Proactive, hands-on, and able to work independently in a dynamic project environment.
