For our client - a renowned biotech company in Leiden, The Netherlands - we are looking for an Associate Scientist - Molecular Bacteriology.

You will form part of the department of Bacterial Vaccines Discovery and Early Development that focuses on research and early development of vaccines against infectious bacterial diseases.

Their key R&D activities lie in the fields of bioinformatics, molecular engineering, genetic modification, functional genomics, molecular microbiology and biochemistry. You will use your expertise to execute experiments with an appreciable level of autonomy.

Job Position Requirements

  • Basic microbiology practice: bacterial cultivation and strain identification, including BSL-II pathogens
  • Basic molecular biology techniques: isolation of DNA, RNA and protein material, and associated (analytical) methods such as PCR, SDS-PAGE and Western blot
  • Genetic manipulation of bacteria
  • Small-scale recombinant protein expression and purification methods
  • GMO registration and maintenance of GMO licenses
     

Areas of full responsibility

  • Planning and practical realization of the research (experiments and tests) under the supervision of scientist(s) according to established and written procedures
  • Arranging necessaries for experiments
  • Setting up new assays
  • Performing literature studies
  • Documentation of experiments and results in (electronic) lab notebooks and report
  • Evaluation of results together with the supervisor (scientist / senior scientist)’
  • Writing work instructions and SOP’s
  • Potential future (deputy) lab head role
  • GMO registration and maintenance of GMO licenses

Education

  • Minimum HBO education or equivalent level

Experience

  • 2-4 years work experience (minimum)


Practicalities

  • Location: Leiden, The Netherlands
  • Duration: 1 year contract with a high possibility of extension
  • Start-date: 1 September 2023
